(ARA) - Now that the weather is getting cooler,
it’s time to start thinking about that trip south for the winter. If
you are one of the snowbirds who will be migrating to warmer regions
of the country this year, make sure your RV is ready for the trip by
cleaning your holding tank.
Holding tanks are a necessary fact of life for
boat and RV owners. The tanks need to be properly drained and cleaned
on a regular basis, or spending time in the vehicle or boat becomes
disagreeable. There are also those times when a pump-out station is
miles away.
“Dealing with the holding tank is probably one
of the most difficult parts of owning a boat or RV,” says Terje Gronlie
of Odorlos, a waste treatment manufacturer. “It’s something no one wants
to think about.”
The usual method of cleaning a holding tank involves
using products containing formaldehyde, a powerful poison that kills
bacteria, and in large concentrations, can be harmful. Once the tanks
are pumped out, the chemicals end up in the ground water and lakes and
streams. And the smell never really goes away.
There is now an alternative treatment called
Odorlos that is completely nontoxic and uses an innovative approach
to waste control. Based on the same cutting-edge technology used by
major waste water treatment plants and septic tanks, this clear, odorless
liquid speeds up the natural composting process and eliminates odor
by feeding the bacteria an alternative energy source. The result: waste
and tissue are broken down easily, 98.5 percent of the odor is eliminated,
and the end result is completely biodegradable.
“When you have a lot of RVs dumping in the same
tank, all those chemicals can cause problems for the environment,” says
Gronlie. “This is a good way to help eliminate some of that toxic waste.”
The treatment works so efficiently that about
half the amount is needed compared with traditional products -- only
4 ounces for 40 gallons of waste. And there are no added perfumes or
dyes that can stain carpets or woodwork. Packaging sizes are 36 ounces
to 168 ounces (liquid), and 10-pack (dry) and 5-pound buckets.
Odorlos is available at RV and Marine dealers,
Camping World, West Marine, Wal-Mart and Boaters World. For more information
or to place an order call (800) 869-8764 or visit www.odorlos.com.
