Job Interview Tips

 

Use these tips when preparing for your job interview.


* Research the company--you can find info in industry publications and through investment publications such as Moody's and Standard and Poors which can be found at many libraries.

* Find out as much as you can about the position beforehand from contacts in the organization and what the organization needs from the person in that position and relate how you can fulfill those needs.

* Anticipate questions and prepare and rehearse answering those questions.

* Take a copy of your references to the job interview.

* Get to the interview early.

* Dress in an approperiate style for the interview. Be well groomed, shoes shined.

* If a suit is approperiate then wear a silk tie.

* Smile at the interviewer and be polite.

* Maintain eye contact during the inteview, be confident, and enthusiastic.

* Vary the tone and tempo of your speech.

* Be positive at all times, never criticize.

* Be honest.

* Maintain good posture.

* If you have to address a negative experience stress something learned from the experience.

* Let the interviewer be the one to bring up the topic of salary or compensation.

* Questions to prepare for:

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are your major accomplishments on your last job?
  • Are you willing to relocate?
  • How much are you willing to travel?
  • Give an example of a difficult problem you faced and how you solved it.
  • What kind of supervision do you work best under?
  • Can you function with out close supervision and guidance from superiors?
  • Where do you want to be in 5 years, what kind of work do you want to be doing?
  • What are you long-range goals?
  • Is there anything else I should know about you?

* Questions to ask at the interview:

  • What happened to the person in this position before me?
  • What will be the main goals of the department?
  • What is the most difficult part of this job--be prepared to describe how you would handle those difficulties.

* Thank the interviewer, get their name, title, and address so you can send them a thank you letter the next day. Express your continued interest in the position in the thank you letter.
