These are tips and guidelines for
hiring a lawyer. Consider these guidelines a starting point and not
all encompassing nor everything your unique circumstances demand be
taken into consideration when seeking legal council.
* Begin by definning what your objective
is and exactly what you need the lawyer to accomplish.
* Get referrals from friends and
business associates.
* Ask the lawyers you meet with if
they can supply a list of referrals who would allow you to contact them
in regards to the lawyers work.
* Go to the meeting with the attorney
with specific questions to ask related to your situation.
* Make sure you can understand what
the lawyer tells you--don't choose one who will use technical or legal
language that you don't fully comprehend.
* Get specific information on how
they bill--inquire into volume discounts or putting the lawyer on retainer
or paying a fixed fee for the entire job instead of an hourly fee if
approperiate.
* Be upfront and completely honest
with the lawyer about what you need them to accomplish. Discuss expectations
you have and what is in turn expected from you and what would create
a situation where you terminate the services of the lawyer.
* You should be on time for the appointment
and so should the lawyer you are interviewing.
* The best lawyer for the job is
not always the most expensive one.
