Job Search Tips
* Volunteer - If you know where you want to work
offer to volunteer there--it gets your foot in the door to make connections,
learn when openings come up, find out what job skills are needed and
acquire them through on the job experience, learn what areas you do
and don't want to work in, and let yourself be seen so you can show
off your job skills to those who make hiring decisions.
* Have a telephone answering machine so you don't
miss any job related calls while you are out.
* Keep a master template of your resumé
and cover letter so you can quickly make changes to fit the positon
you are applying for and if doing numerous applications in different
industries keep a template for each industry which emphasizes your skills
and how they benefit firms in that particular industry.
* If your resumé is not getting any results
have a professional resumé writing service look at it and recommend
changes. Its money well spent if you are not comfortable with your own
writing skills or not getting any interviews.
* Take your list of references with you on job
interviews.
* Create a network of contacts in the field you
want to work in--do this in part by
- Contact friends, family, and business associates
who work in the industry.
- Contact professional organizations in the industry
for guidance on who's hiring or when conferences, conventions, seminars,
etc. are happening that you could attend. Career Centers and some
libraries have directories which list industry organizations.
- Contact Alumni networks for leads in the field.
- If you know a supplier to that industry ask
them for contacts.
- Check for Newsgroups on the internet that pertain
to that industry.
- Bid for work when the company places contracts
up for competitive bids.

(If you are looking for a job or a better job you need to be here because the employers are--its free so the price is right)
