5 Steps to Make Your PC Secure

Cool Computer Stuff

To make it on to the TM's cool computer stuff page "the stuff" not only has to be cool it has to be functional as well and free or at least a thrifty purchase.

Rocket Dock

Rocket Dock is a cool application launcher that resides on your desktop and helps eliminate desktop clutter--icons from various programs laying all around your computer desktop. The TM likes to make his invisible and only show with mouse roll over. It has a sort of Vista like look and feel to it in a see through skin (which you can change or customize to your liking). As you can see in the image below when you roll the mouse of an icon it gets bigger.

This is just one of many customizable looks you can set up. You can minimize running applications to it. Much more than just nifty eye candy you can organize your desktop and get rid of all those pesty icons that tend to accumulate al over your desktop over time. Check this one out.

Vista Start Menu

If you are like the TM and over time add so many programs to your PC that your non Vista Windows menu can't hold them all any more then this is for you. It lets you scroll to see all the programs you have loaded on your PC and access other resources such as the run key all from this screen. It is designed to bring the look of Vista to non Vista star menu's but the real beauty of it is the increased functionality it provides. Looks cool too.

The free version gives you the scroll functionality and the paid version let's you customize more features, but just the free version is a life saver to those of us who have more programs than we can access with the native screen menu.

Spamato

Spamato is without question the best anti-spam filter I've ever seen. Its not just one filter, but a multidimensional program based on six different filters, see screen shot below, that does a wonderful job of protecting your inbox from spam as soon as its filters are trained.

PC world named it one of its 101 Fantastic Freebies, but that doesn't do it justice--this product should make anybody's top five list any day of the week. It's free which earns it a BIG endorsement from the TM and if you have problem with spam this is the solution for you.

Altiris Virtualization Software

Altiris (now owned by Symantec) is a virtual layer that lets you install an application and run it, test drive it, and see how you like it and the install is contained in the virtual layer which means it doesn't integrate into your computer's registry or create conflicts with an existing version of the same application. This is great for testing new software to see how you like.

When you are through playing with it you just deactivate the layer and its like it was never installed until you activate the layer again or you can delete the layer and the whole install is gone as if it never happened.

There are so many useful applications for this. Lately the TM has been down loading the major anti-spyare programs which have a free trial period and doing one scan with them just to get an additional scan from a different program then just deleting the whole layer when I'm finished.

It is free for one PC and their are paid for versions for the enterprize level user as well who many want to give everyone their own copy.
